October 15, 2003
Q: "How do you determine when the time is right to introduce Magic in a new language? Do you anticipate the day when players in Russia can buy cards in Russian or players in India could use Hindi or Bengali cards in a tournament?"
--Matthew McKenzie, New York, NY
A: From Wendy Wallace, product manager:
"Great question Matthew! Not too surprising, localizing into new languages is largely based on whether or not the financial analysis supports it. Related to that is the simple question: does a market currently have enough interest in Magic to localize or, in some cases, do we think that by supplying local language product it would drive that interest? While adding a new language does take time, it's definitely something we are prepared to do when those opportunities present themselves. One thing we do to judge interest in new languages is to provide localized rulebooks, for instance PDFs are currently available of the Eighth Edition rulebook in Dutch, Finnish, Greek, Polish, Russian and Swedish. So will the future bring new languages for Magic? It's probably only a matter of time."

Cunning Wish, Burning Wish, Golden Wish и т.

No rest. No mercy. No matter what.

Goblin Lackey
Entomb
Frantic Search
Goblin Lackey
The Extended Constructed format has gotten too fast. One of the biggest culprits is the Goblin deck and Goblin Lackey is the most egregious offender. The introduction of the Onslaught block (and especially the Scourge set) has given Goblin decks some extremely high quality Goblins and the Lackey's ability to put them into play for free is simply too good for a first turn play.
Entomb
Entomb is also an extremely powerful first turn play that speeds up the format too much. Entomb serves as a 'tutor' for Reanimator decks, putting a card into the graveyard where it's easy to get into play very quickly. That's simply too much power for a one-mana spell.
Frantic Search
We've known for years that the 'free spells' from the Urza block were a mistake. This whole class of spells keeps showing up in combo decks that need only a few turns before they can 'go off' and win the game in a highly noninteractive manner. Frantic Search was contributing significant power and speed to multiple combo decks in the Extended environment, so it had to go.

MTG:Battleground
You select a Duelist to represent the player who may summons spells and creatures to attempt to bring the opponent from 20 life down to 0. Duelists have two innate abilities - a free Tim-like 1 damage staff, or a damage shield that burns mana.
You may have up to 10 spells that will represent your deck. These spells may be cast at any time you can afford them, and as many times as you wish. There are creatures, enchantments, and sorcery/instants to build a deck from. You may build either a one or two color deck.
The duel takes place in a rectangular arena with a line to denote sides. If the Duelist crosses the line, they begin to take damage for every second they are over the line.
Your Mana begins to randomly appear on your side of the arena as Mana Spheres. As you pick up a Sphere, your total possible Mana Pool is increased by one. This emulates the fact that you slowly gain ability to cast more expensive spells as the game progresses. (note that when you play a two color deck, you select which sphere will appear first, then your sphere's alternate after that)
You slowly regain mana over time as well as picking up mana shards left from creatures that have died, as well as when you pick up a sphere.
You may summon up to five creatures in play at any one time.
When you summon a creature, a spawn point is marked on the arena. The creature will appear at that point and return to it once it has either survived a combat phase or been unsummoned.
Creatures only enter combat with other creatures at their level (ie, ground vs ground, flyers vs flyers)... unless the creature has an ability like Giant Spider. All creatures have a power/toughness bar beneath them that represents their stats. When a creature enters combat with another creature, they deal their power to the other's toughness. When combat resolves, if a creature survived, it respawns back at its spawn point with the remainder of its toughness.
Generally, when you summon a creature, it will automatically attempt to cross the line and damage the opponent. If the creature runs into another creature on the path to the opponent, it will enter combat with that creature. Once that combat resolves, the creature normally respawns if it survived unless it has trample in which case it continues the attack toward the opponent. Once a creature damages the opponent and survives, it will respawn.
Utility creatures, such as Llanowar Elves, will go to the back of the arena to perform their function, while some creatures are designated as blockers and will remain on your side of the arena.
Regeneration allows a creature to respawn when it dies back at its spawn point with full power/toughness provided that you have mana available for the regeneration cost.
There are several ways of winning a
Bring your opponent's life total down to 0, have more life than your opponent when the duel clock runs out, or win via an alternative condition such as Test of Endurance.

Here is an explanation of the changes from Magic R&D:
Extended Bannings
Ancient Tomb
Years of watching constructed metagames evolve has taught us that efficient ways to generate fast mana are always a problem. Ancient Tomb simply adds too much speed to the environment.
Goblin Recruiter
Goblin Recruiter's ability to stack an arbitrarily large portion of your deck allows goblin-based combo decks to kill as early as turn 2. That's too fast for a healthy environment and the Recruiter is one of several casualties of our effort to eliminate realistic turn 2 kills from the environment.
Grim Monolith
Grim Monolith has to go for essentially the same reasons as Ancient Tomb. Things happen too quickly when the available mana acceleration cards are this good.
Hermit Druid
The current crop of reanimator decks are winning the game by turn 2 and they all depend on dumping their entire library into the graveyard with Hermit Druid. The Druid simply does too much, too fast.
Oath of Druids
In our effort to make sure games last more than two or three turns, we felt we needed to get rid of Oath of Druids in addition to fast mana and combo enabling cards. Oath of Druids effectively ends the game on turn 2 against almost all creature decks, making it essentially impossible to have a healthy environment as long as this card is legal.
Tinker
Tinker is both a tutor and a mana accelerator, so we've been worried about it for years. The recent release of Mirrodin added many powerful artifacts to the environment and put Tinker decks over the top (as evidenced by Pro Tour New Orleans).
Type 1 Restrictions
Burning Wish
Most 'tutors' are restricted in Type 1 because it defeats the purpose of restricting a card if you can play four copies of an efficient way to go get it. Since the most powerful cards in Type 1 are sorceries (Yawgmoth's Will, Timetwister, Balance, Mind Twist, etc.) it was possible to play the equivalent of four copies of any one of these simple by moving it into your sideboard. Interestingly, Cunning Wish was left off the restricted list because the one extra mana combined with the fact that Type 1 has less powerful instants than sorceries means it does not appear to be a problem.
Chrome Mox
Time has shown that fast mana is even more powerful in Type 1 than in other formats.
Lion's Eye Diamond
Some fast mana cards are easier to abuse than others, but recent advances in deck design have shown that even the drawback on Lion's Eye Diamond isn't severe enough to balance a zero-mana artifact that gives you three mana.
